The 49ers have continued to show unbreakable support for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo – but some insiders are not buying it.
Gerappolo has a 24–9 start on the San Francisco team, having been to the Super Bowl in his only full season. The problem is, he has made 33 starts (including the playoffs) in a span of just four seasons – and many of those wins have been on the strength of a top-flight defense and running game.
Rumors have swallowed all the offers that the 49ers may look to upgrade the position, with Deshaun Watson also associated with the team as he faces his own offseason drama with the Texans. 49ers GM John Lynch said committed to Garrappolo, last week he will be the Week 1 starter if he is healthy, but some are not so sure.
“Do I believe the 49ers have general manager John Lynch when he claims that Garpolo will be his starter in 2021? Definitely not,” the NFL emphasized on Michael Lombardi Wrote in The Athletic. “They are very active, very aggressive to play it back in a year, who do not have full confidence.”
It is likely that San Francisco will at least add a high-quality backup to challenge Garoppolo, or to provide insurance in the event of an injury. A separate report in Athletic Mention 49ers was in contact with the Panthers regarding Teddy Bridgwater.
Garoppolo could also come on the move if his team were to move on from him – perhaps for New England, the team that selected him in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
