Brooks Koepka’s fiancee Jena Sims has helped him to become a better person.
The eight-time PGA tour winner, in a new interview with Golf Digest, name-dropped the actress while explaining his personal growth in recent years.
“The way I’m wired, I’m all on or all off. Maybe I didn’t understand that the first 25 years of my life, but in the past five years I’ve been able to own who I am and find that happiness,” he said.
“I don’t know if that’s because of Jena or because I understand more of how things work, but you mature a little more. I can’t put my finger on it. But when it comes together, and you see what works, you say, this is the program, and I’m going to stick with it.”
Koepka went on to admit that “the only thing I care about is playing good golf… Everything else is an afterthought,” which has admittedly impacted his personal life.
“Every great athlete struggles with that compared to a normal person… That makes it hard to have friends or dating or family… Over the past few years, I’ve found that because I’ve grown into myself, and I’m genuinely happy inside, it’s easier to say no… I don’t have the relationships in my life that I would want, but I want to be the best golfer I can be. So for another 10 years it’s just going to be what it is, and that’s the sacrifice you make when you’re on the extreme end when it comes to the mental side.”
Koepka proposed to Sims on March 3 while on the beach in Jupiter, Fla. The actress confirmed the engagement on April Fool’s Day in a post on Instagram, captioned, “Forever is no joke.”
The pro golfer got down on one knee in a white Givenchy t-shirt, dark pants and white sneakers. Sims wore a purple long sleeve ruched mini dress and Nike sneakers.
Koepka and Sims have been dating since 2017 and has become a sideline staple on the PGA Tour. She will likely be in attendance when Koepka plays for the U.S. team in next week’s Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.
In 2019, Sims told Golf Digest that she loves “being able to support Brooks and watch him because he’s so talented. It’s so much fun to watch him.”
Sims also explained how the couple met at the Masters in 2015.
“And that’s so special because I’m from Georgia, so it’s perfect. We were on Hole 7, which I don’t even remember, but he’s like, ‘Oh, I remember what you were wearing, where we were standing, everything.’ It was cool,” she said, noting, “We hadn’t dated since then. We were just friends at that point.”
Sims is the founder of Pageant of Hope — a nonprofit organization with a mission to empower, celebrate and advocate for children facing challenges and celebrating inner beauty and self confidence.
She even “dabbles” in golf from time-to-time after growing up around the game. Her dad is “huge golfer” in her native Georgia, she told the website.
