Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey will miss the remainder of the season after suffering an ankle injury in Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins, the team announced Monday. He will miss the team’s five remaining regular-season games.
McCaffrey, who was put on injured reserve earlier this season, injured his ankle when he rolled it in the first half of Sunday’s game, per head coach Matt Rhule. After the game, in which he had 10 carries for 35 yards, the running back was spotted in a walking book, according to The Sun-Sentinel.
The Panthers dropped to 5-7 on the season following the 33-10 loss to the Dolphins. They will face the Falcons on Dec. 12, after their bye week.
McCaffrey had missed five games earlier this season due to a hamstring injury. He returned to the team in a Week 9 loss to the Patriots. The Pro Bowler will finish his fifth professional season with 99 carries for 442 yards and just one rushing touchdown. He also had 37 catches for 343 yards and another score.
McCaffrey, a former first-round pick, became the NFL’s highest-paid running back in April 2020 after signing a four-year, $64 million extension with the Panthers. His season was cut short last year, however, due to a shoulder injury.
With McCaffrey now sidelined, rookie Chuba Hubbard, a fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma State, will likely get more playing time. He’s accumulated 427 yards and three touchdowns so far this season.
