ALBANY — Attorney General Letitia James’ longtime campaign strategist Luis Miranda Jr. — father of Broadway star Lin Manuel Miranda — has been making calls to donors gauging their support should the powerful pol opt to launch her own 2022 gubernatorial bid, according to a new report.
James is one of the New York Democratic pols who could take on Gov. Kathy Hochul in a primary next year and Miranda has recently been making calls on her behalf, CNBC reported Thursday.
Longtime political broker Rev. Al Sharpton also told The Post last month that allies of James, along with associates of state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Long Island Rep. Tom Suozzi, have called him asking what he thinks about potential bids.
James’ campaign paid Miranda’s political campaign company, Hamilton Campaign Network, a total of $16,123.14 between January and April, 2021 according to the most recent filing period, which ended in July, that was posted on the state Board of Elections website.
Miranda has managed James’ political campaigns for years, including her 2018 attorney general run and before that, her successful campaigns for New York City public advocate.
He has served as a consultant for Upper Manhattan Rep. Adriano Espaillat, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and US Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
He is also the co-founder of the powerful lobbying MirRam Group and founding president of the Hispanic Federation, one of the nation’s leading Latino advocacy organizations.
James released a bombshell report Aug. 3 following a nearly six month investigation, finding ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women — including current and former female staffers — and fostered a toxic work environment.
Cuomo announced he would resign from office shortly after, officially stepping down on Aug. 24.
The former governor and his attorneys denied wrongdoing.
Since then at least five district attorneys — Manhattan, Albany, Westchester, Nassau and Oswego — have requested documents from James’ office in their own separate investigations into Cuomo’s actions.
Brittany Commissio, a current state worker who accused Cuomo of sexually harassing her in the Executive Mansion during the work day, has filed a criminal complaint with the Albany Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation is being handled jointly with Albany County DA David Soares, and so far several subpoenas to the State Capitol Building and Albany-based mansion for information in connection with their probe.
James’ office is also handling a criminal investigation into the alleged misuse of state resources tied to Cuomo’s $5.1 million book deal for ‘his pandemic-era memoir American Crisis.’
Her office issued a subpoena to the embattled ethics watchdog agency, the Joint Commission on Public Ethics, at the beginning of the summer, seeking records pertaining to the contract and its approval by the panel.
