In November 2017, “Full House” actress Lori Laughlin learned from college admissions counselor William “Rick” Singer that his eldest wife, Olivia Jade Giannulli, A place at the University of Southern California will be guaranteed. But he told her to keep it “hush-hush” until March, according to the new Netflix The documentary “Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admission Scandal,” released on Wednesday.
What happened next is that he got very nervous in his scam – in which the parents fraudulently paid their children large sums of money in exchange for getting them admitted to elite colleges.
Olivia Z’s school counselor held a regular meeting with USC about her student applicants and noticed that Laughlin’s daughter was flagged off as a recruiter for the crew. Both Olivia Jade and her sister Isabella had introduced themselves to rowing machines for their college applications to pass as coxswains. The counselor stated that he has no knowledge of involvement in the sport. The meeting returned to his father, Fashion Designer Mosimo Gianulli, Who in one recording referred to the counselor as “nosy f-k”.
Giannulli confronted him at school, “aggressively” asking why he was focusing on his daughter’s future. Donna Hennell, a USC administrator who was allegedly facilitating the Singer scandal at the school, inquired of the incident and left a bewildered voicemail for Singer.
“I don’t want anyone to go to school and shout at the counselors,” she said.
Federal officials would wind up the conspiracy a few months later, but Giannulli’s incident was a symbol of the Brazen entitlement shown by those involved in the scandal, which launched a federal investigation known as Operation Varsity Blues. The new documentary opens an explosive case involving 57 people – including Laughlin and fellow actress Felicity Huffman, who both served jail time – And when it comes to the college admissions process in the US, how much compensation can be awarded for mediation.
The film mixes real-life players with dramatic re-enactments that use oral conversations recorded by authorities during their investigation. In the film, Matthew Modine played the role of Singer, a slippery, robotic unsuccessful basketball coach who became an independent college counselor in Sacramento during the late 90s when such service was rare. There are also actor stand-ins for defendants, including New York’s lead attorney Gordon Caplan (but not Laughlin or Huffman) – all accented dialogues taken from FBI recordings.
Singer refers to the “side door”, explaining his victory formula for the client Caplan.
There was a front door for children who could enter elite colleges on the basis of their merits. There was a back door, where parents could write a check of a very large size, hoping it contained zero enough to send to the admissions office. And then there was Singer’s Side Door, which he opened with a company called Key.
“We are a $ 290 million company that I own,” explains Singer Caplan, who pleaded guilty to conspiring to mail mail to his daughter’s ACT in response to Procter Change in 2019.
“We help America’s wealthiest families bring their children to school. We have every NBA owner, every NFL owner. We’ve got it all … They don’t want to play with this thing, that’s why they want something in schools. So i did 761 [of] He says, “I always work:” My family wants guarantees.
According to investigators, between 2011 and 2018, parents paid them $ 25 million to bribe coaches and university administrators to open side doors for their children.
He did this by exploiting two paths.
Singer will classify students as having learning disabilities, which they will have special privileges if they take standardized tests. Then he will have Mark Riddell, a Harvard-educated college exam presenter as Proctor, who essentially does the exam for him.
The singer will also pose for future students as recruits for low-profile sports such as sailing, water polo and crew. Coaches and administrators used to take money to accept them as walk-ons, and the students did not show up easily for the team. In a bizarre twist, the film shows how parents tried to hide it from their children.
Although industry peers and former customers portrayed Singer as disgusting and cheeky, his fraud had remained confined beneath the surface for decades.
“Rick was always a drummer in the business,” Sacramento-based college counselor Margie Emmott says in the film. “He was always giving presentations in country clubs … and I also knew what his presentations were, and those were promises he couldn’t keep. And that’s a lie.”
But she did not have the undo position because Giannulli harassed a counselor or a client loosened her lips at a cocktail party.
Instead, the plan was canceled after Los Angeles businessman Maury Tobin was arrested in the spring of 2018 on an unrelated securities charge. As Tobin traded information, investigators reported that Yale football coach Rudy Meredith sought a bribe from him.
Meredith then hit out at Singer in a befitting slap, which helped her make phone calls and in-person conversations with her clients.
As shown in the film, many of them have already been sentenced and given time. But Singer – who pleaded guilty to fraud, money laundering and fraud in 2019 – remained a free man until everyone was sentenced for his role in the conspiracy.
Singer is back in Sacramento, swimming twice a day at a local tennis club and making several phone calls. According to Amot, he is telling people that he will not go to jail because he knows the judge.
“Knowing Rick Singer, you don’t know what to believe,” Amot says, “You don’t know if he believes; if it’s a lie.
