Pfizer is pushing the government of India for an “expeditious approval route” for its COVID-19 vaccine – and announced a donation of more than $ 70 million in the midst of a disastrous surge of infections in the country.
“Unfortunately, our vaccine is not registered in India, although our application was submitted months ago,” CEO Albert Borla wrote a letter to his colleagues in India, Which he shared on LinkedIn on Monday. “We are currently in discussion with the Government of India with an expedited approval route to make our Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine available for use in the country.”
He also stated that Pfizer employees in the US, Europe and Asia are working to ship drugs that the Government of India has approved as part of its COVID treatment protocol.
“These drugs, worth more than $ 70 million, will be made available immediately, and we will work closely with the government and our NGO partners where they are most needed,” he said.
It is reported that India recorded 368,147 new COVID-19 cases and 3,417 new deaths on Monday.
Since the onset of the epidemic, there have been 19.9 million cases of the virus in India – behind only the US, numbering more than 32.4 million.
According to the Ministry of Health, more than 218,000 people in India have died from the virus.
However, experts believe that both figures are important grounds.
Leaders of 13 opposition parties have urged the Indian government to launch a free vaccination campaign and ensure that all hospitals receive a smooth flow of oxygen.
Over the weekend, several hospital authorities called for court intervention on oxygen supply in New Delhi, which has extended the lockdown for a week to prevent the outbreak of infection.
