Rory McIlroy finished his remarkable final round at the 2022 Masters in style — now he waits to see if his charge was enough.
McIlroy, 32, chipped a bunker shot near the middle of the green at par-4 18 and saw it take a long and perfect left turn into the cup for a round-sealing birdie at Augusta on Sunday.
The unreal shot gave him a final round 64 (8-under par) to match the lowest final round in Masters history, joining Gary Player’s 64 in 1979. It is one off the course record of 63 held by Nick Price (1934) and Greg Norman (1996).
His bogey-free round included six birdies and an eagle. McIlroy, who is 7-under for the tournament and has never won the green jacket, moved into second behind leader Scottie Scheffler (10-under at the time).
“It’s all you dream about, right,” McIlroy told CBS after his round. “You dream about getting ourselves in position. I wasn’t close enough to the lead I don’t think. Scottie’s playing really, really well. But to play as well as I did today and then to finish like this it’s absolutely incredible. This tournament never ceases to amaze, that’s (after the shot) as happy as I’ve ever been on a golf course.”
Collin Morikawa, who was paired with McIlroy, also finished his round with a birdie shot out of the same bunker to end the day at 4-under.
