Out of a youth league game, something like this reads: 19 out, 1 like strike out.

The Mets were beaten by Mets’ Jacob DeGrom and Edwin Diaz for the Rockies in the final 6 1/3 innings of the team’s doublehead opener on Saturday in Denver. Digrom hit nine consecutive sixes in the middle innings, one of which put the Mets icon Tom Sewer’s 51-year-old MLB record to shame. The current ace from New York tied his career with 14 from six innings, giving him a total of 35 runs in 20 innings this season.

“Well, it would have been nice to have arrived,” said DeGrom, about to tie the sewer (Per MLB.com) Belongs to. “But I fell a little short.”

Diaz came in seventh place after rallying to gain an edge in the top half of the Mets. He went on to preserve the 4-3 victory.

Dagrom and Diaz were going up against a team that was in the middle of the pack in the National League when it comes to strikes; Colorado recorded an average of 9.0 KS games per game. The Rockies’ initial nine hitters were hit at least once. Sam Hilliard dismissed all three of his batsmen.

According to Metros’ strike streak, MLB.com, Mets manager Luis Rojas said, “People were just getting into their position with no balls in the game, like going out of their dugouts for three innings.”

But Rocky still managed to play the ball well enough to score on DeGrom. Rimel Tapia homered, Dom Nunez three and Charlie Blackmon doubled. It also had three fly-ball outs, an infield popout and a ground ball that was thrown to an error by Mets second baseman Jeff McNeill – leaving all three Rockies undefeated.

Maybe it was the best, yet, Degrom and Diaz were the Mets’ primary defensive players in the game.
