United States lawmakers on Tuesday expressed bipartisan support for blaming ex-Minneapolis police Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd.
Sen. Tim Scott (RSC) told reporters on Capitol Hill that the jury’s verdict indicated a turning point in American history.
“I think our justice system is just getting more,” Scott said, the only black Republican in the Senate.
“I am grateful for the verdict and certainly thought it was a murder.”
Scott said: “And so my first thought, or shortly thereafter, is: I believe this reinforces the fact that while we may all need to increase our confidence in certain parts of the system, ” [the] The truth of the matter is that it reinforces a commitment that leads us to believe that the justice system is becoming more equitable. “
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) Said, “Defendant, if he does not like the verdict, he can appeal.”
“But it seems like a good example of a system, the way we hope it works,” he said.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (RS.C.) said, “I think they can appeal whether they got a fair hearing or not, but I told everyone how it works, I accept the jury’s verdict And leave it in court. “
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) called the verdict “a step in the right direction for justice”.
“Thank God the jury validated what I saw,” he said during a news conference with members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
“Thank you, George Floyd, for sacrificing your life for justice.”
Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), head of the Congressional Black Caucus, said, “Guilty on all charges. This is just the first step. We clearly know that justice has been delayed.”
