Trai Young injury update: Hawks guard headed for MRI after ankle sprain

The Hawks will have a better idea on Thursday of how long guard Trey Young will be out with a sprain in the left ankle.

An overtime loss to the Knucks in Atlanta’s third quarter Wednesday resulted in Young twisting his ankle in a shot attempt and did not return. He needed help as he moved to the locker room and court room in Madison Square Garden, New York.

Atlanta coach Nate McMillan told reporters after the game that X-rays at the ankle were negative. Young is scheduled for an MRI exam on Thursday.

Young posted an optimistic update on Twitter after the game.

Atlanta’s next game is Friday at home vs. Miami.

Young received 20 points and 14 assists in the first 30 minutes of his injury. The Hawks led 95-87 when they lost Young, the team leader in scoring and assists; They lost 137–127 in OT and finished fifth in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks placed him in fourth place.

Lou Williams is the Hawks’ top choice to replace Young in the lineup. Williams, 34, is playing his customary sixth-man role with Atlanta after dealing with the Clinters, which sent Rajon Rondo to LA on March 25 at the NBA trade deadline.
