Desperate Yankees scouted Enibal Sanchez with rotation clash

CLEVELAND – The Yankees were among the teams to check in Anibal Sanchez for their bullpen season on Friday, The Post confirmed.

The right hand is still searching for a place to descend after the ugly 2020 season. Sanchez suffered finger pain during a bullpen session earlier in the month after just 13 pitches.

The 37-year-old Sanchez was as solid as recently as two years ago, when he had a 3.85 ERA in 166 innings with the nationals. But he followed that up with a 6.62 ERA in 53 innings with Washington last season, when he gave up the most earned runs in the National League.

He then opted not to sign with a team while waiting to see how the COVID-19 protocol was affected this season.

MLB Network’s John Heyman first reported the Yankees’ presence at Sanchez’s Florida showcase. The Phillies, Marlins, Tigers, Diamondbacks and Blue Jays are also showing interest.

After expressing confidence in his rotational depth in the season, the Yankees’ pitching has been subdued outside of Gerrit Cole.

Corey Kluber, Jameson Tillon and Domingo Jarman are all coming off the season in which they didn’t pitch either (with Tillon coming back from Tommy John surgery and German MLB suspension) before being sidelined with shoulder strain).

His innings will need to be monitored throughout the season. The Yankees may soon call Davey Garcia, with the team finishing sixth in the middle of the 13-day stretch with a six-day run. He is on a taxi squad during the current road trip and manager Aaron Boone has hinted at the possible use of another starter in the coming days.

His depth was also hit when Clarke Schmidt suffered a strained elbow tendon that has slowed to heal.
