Drew Lock uncertainty turns Broncos into huge NFL draft wild card

The Broncos are not lock-ed in any draft slot.

Of all the teams that have reached No. 9 in the top 10 of the NFL Draft, the most intriguing may be because their current and future quarterback positions are in flux. They can stick with Drew Lock – a second-round pick in 2019 – or they can replace him with a first-rounder, possibly by trading aggressively in the first round.

The quarterback will be the first three picks, but two of Justin Fields, Mack Jones and Trey Lance will be available when the Falcons are ranked No. 4 on the clock. The Bengals (No. 5) and the Dolphins (No. 6) were drafted first. Quarterback around last year. So, are the Broncos looking to trade?

“If we think it’s good enough to go up and get a player,” said first-year general manager George Patan. “There can be players in this draft who deserve it.”

Patan said he has made calls to inquire about the call down but he has not yet spoken about trading as he has to see how the board moves and who is available.

“We like Drew Lock,” Patton said. “What we don’t want to do is force it and bring a man in, pay a guy to come in and maybe he’s not as good as we have. Maybe he’s not good enough to compete.” “We want to find the right man, and we still have time.”

Adding a free agent or mid-round quarterback can be seen as competing for the lock. Adding a quarterback picked in the top 10 is replacing Locke, whether sooner or later. Patton described both Lance and Fields as “elite athletes”.

“Both [have] Really strong weapons, both really talented, smart, “Patton said.” They have all your intangibles in quarterbacks and football players. They’re kinda raw, but really high ceiling. [for] Both players. “

The last two quarterback Broncos first-round picks – Tim Tebow and Paxton Lynch – made a combined 20 career starts and dropped out of the NFL. The lock is 8-10 as a starter.

“As you know, he has a lot of talent,” Patton said. “I think he’s becoming a better supporter, but we’re still going to look at the quarterback position. I’ve said that since I came here, we want to compete; that’s the goal, and we’re Make plans to do. “
