If you watch Netflix binge Shadow and bone This weekend and you’ve never read any of Lee Begdugo’s books that were based on it, you might be thinking of trying out the show Trap for the main trilogy.
Here’s some unsolicited advice: don’t start with the first novel, Shadow and bone.
But wait, you can ask yourself if this book is not based on that show? Isn’t this the first book of the series? The one who sets the stage for everything? The one who introduces Grisha, Surya Sumoner Alina Starkov, and the sentimental darkness that rips Ravana in half?
correct. But you know how some Star Wars fans give non-spontaneous orders to watch movies? I am about to suggest a similar strategy to dive into the Grishavers books. This is by no means a particularly controversial way, but for those unfamiliar with the books, I am your Grisha guide here.
And with that: start with Of six crows.
Six crows This is the first book in Bardugo’s spin-off diology. It centers on a band of criminals, led by the clever Kaz Breaker, as they pull off a grand successor. It takes two years after the events of the first trilogy, but the first book doesn’t really spoil any Shadow and boneAlaina, The Darkling and the rest of the Ravka crew. I don’t have any hard empirical data on this, but I think it would be a danger Six crows More popular than the main trilogy. Why would the show show crows characters, even if they did not appear canonically in the first books?
Newbies start reading with the series Six crows After watching the show, six “crows,” five of them, will not be defeated – Kaz, his right-hand knife detective Inej, sharpshooter Jesper, ravenous detective Nina, and Fjerdadi soldier (and Grisha’s hunter) Matthias – TV series Appeared in season 1. Her characters would make more sense in the show with the book’s background, and the chance to see her future adventures in existing books makes her story in the series more interesting. apart from this, Six crows
Step into the world beyond Ravka. Shadow and bone Ravana is mainly concerned with politics and what it means to be grisly, which is interesting in itself, but Six crows The universe spreads over, and Burdugo’s worldliness gets a chance to shine.
But start from Six crows It also makes sense because the pair of crows is just objectively better writing. Shadow and bone One is all the trappings of the first novel. The first-person perspective does a disservice to the other characters, and it follows a specific chosen one setup. Even Bardugo admits that there are things she wants him to do differently, such as removing more character diversity and Mal’s character. The main trilogy gets better with each subsequent book, as Bardugo grows in his world capacity. But if you want to get in from the get-go, Six crows Is the way to go.

My recommended order – even if you haven’t seen the show – is to start with Six crows, Which aptly enters readers into a new world, and features a vivid, dynamic characters. Six crows Does, jointly, end on a cliff, but the bets it makes will make the conflict in the main series even richer.
If you’re curious enough, you should switch to the main trilogy (Shadow and bone, Siege and storm, And Waste and growing), Since the second crows book, Devious empire, Some spoilers for the larger Central Grishwars plot, and some appearances from the characters appearing in the first trilogy. Then go Devious empire. After that, you can dive into the sequel (King of scars And issued new Rule of wolves) Which draws Nina, squealer Zoya Navalisky and pull-to-the-to-the-in-the-in-the-show-in-the-Prince Prince Nikolai Lanstove (my favorite character in the franchise) because They deal with the aftermath of the uproar in Ravka.
The Grishavers books are an exciting fantasy series that heralds an entire wave of high-fictional YAs that step outside of typical medieval England settings. If you haven’t paid much attention to the young-adult genre as it is dominating with the culture like the series Twilight And Play hungry Novel, you probably have no idea that Bardugo’s series had an influence on that genre. The world is rich, but the dynamic characters are the ones that capture the hearts of fans. The Netflix series catapulted fans to the book and achieved a terrific feat of adapting the first series, sabotaging small details and making a mark in a world beyond the first story. Reading books will enhance the viewing experience of the show – and prepare you for possible upcoming adventures in upcoming seasons.
Shadow and bone Is streaming on Netflix.
