Umpire Marty Foster calls terrible interference during Marlins-Brewers game

The most mindful call of the 2021 season came in the second inning of the Marlins-Brewers game in Milwaukee on Wednesday afternoon, with umpire Marty Foster asked to do something.

With another Marlins in second and third, second baseman Isan Diaz hit a tapper down the first-base line. Brewers pitcher Zac Godley ran and landed the ball in the grass, then flipped to first baseman Daniel Vogelbach. Simple, well-guarded drama. it’s easy. Godley’s toss defeated Diaz by a wide margin. Corey Dickerson, who was at third base, walked out of the house with a run that put the Marlins ahead 1-0.

And then …

Brian Anderson said, “Brewers play-to-play man Brian, wait a minute.” “They are going to call him safe first.”

Wait what

Foster gestured to Diaz twice, then raised his hands to indicate that the play was dead and that Diaz was safe.

“I have no idea”, Anderson said, echoing the exact feelings of anyone playing live or watching someone live on Twitter minutes and hours later, asking “why he would be called safe in such a situation.”

Diaz was safely summoned, apparently, as Foster ruled that Godley interfered with his path to first base. This decision was made despite Godley never leaving the grass or stepping on the dirt of the baseline.

And despite that Godley’s throw was out of his right hand while Diaz was still three steps away from the pitcher and the ball was safely in Vogelbach’s glove four steps before Diaz reached base.

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell came out to argue, but was reprimanded. A pair of innings later – saw the replays after all in the dugout and confirmed what a terrible call it was – Brewers first-base coach Pat Murphy was evicted by Foster and restrained by Connell.

Diaz should have got the second out. Instead, there was only one. Godley dismissed Chad Vlak, who should have been out of the innings at the end. It was not, and the runner on third base scored the second run of the game on a passed ball, while Sandy Alcantara was at the plate on the pitch.
