Brandon Nimmo, JD Davis with hand injury in Mets limbo

Philadelphia – Brandon Nimmo and JD Davis left Saturday’s game with injuries, leaving the Mets wondering if the two key lineup pieces would be sidelined for an extended stretch.

Davis sustained a left-handed sprain during a swing in his final at-bat and was replaced at third base by Jonathan Villar in the Mets’ 5-4 victory. Nemo was removed from the game during batting in the seventh inning in apparent discomfort. The Mets described his injury as a fusion of the left index finger and said the X-rays were negative.

According to manager Luis Rojas, Nimmo was jammed on the first pitch, and the vibration of the bat was causing trouble. Kevin Pilar finished Nimmo’s bat with a strike and moved to center field.

“We lost two of our best batsmen so far this season in the middle of the game,” Roja said.

Davis and Nimmo will be evaluated on a daily basis.

Optimism remains high among Mets officials in that Marcus Strowman’s right hamstring did not cost him his next start.

Strowman left the performance after just 64 pitches on Friday due to muscle tightness. Both the Mets and Strowman had indicated that the initial removal was a precaution.

On Saturday at Citizen Bank Park, the Mets received a right-handed medical evaluation before beating the Phillies 5-4.

“He’s very optimistic,” manager Luis Rojas said. “The same thing he told me [Friday] Night, he told me today: He is optimistic about making his next debut. The way he reacts since coming out of the game, he is in a good place [Friday] night.”

Rojas revealed additional information about the strained right oblique of Luis Guillerme, which placed the infielder on the injured list before Friday’s game.

Gurjorm, according to Rosas, was practicing batting, and fell to the ground in discomfort after the swing.

“It was his perfect reproach and he was holding it,” Rojas said. “[Saturday] He said that he is feeling better, but this is something that we will see how it progresses.

James McCain said he crossed with Strowman on Friday, playing three balls on a strike ball allowing the Phillies to score both of their runs.

“It was a cross-up between me and Strowman and it just happened to be the most timely,” McCann said.

McCain was just hitting in the plate. McCain also admitted that there are challenges of batting at number eight in the lineup ahead of the pitch.

Jacob Degrom begins Tuesday in St. Louis, a day before his normal schedule. The Mets are still finalizing that there will be a bullpen game on Monday, with either Robert Gelsman or Jacob Barnes getting the ball for a few innings, or if they will need to miss a starter, such as Joey Lucchesi.
