“Is it possible for you to be around?” The umpire asked. “Because Giorgi’s father is so mad and I would like to (pass) someone.”

The person at the other end replied: “You got it.”

The Italian lost the opening round of the tight match to Soribias Torme 7-6. 6–7, 7–5.

The hard-hitting Giorgi has had an up-and-down career, reaching 26th in the world, but not able to leap to the top level of the game. The 29-year-old is currently at number 86.

This is not the first controversy involving Sergio. Former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko claimed that she was deliberately distracting her during the 2017 match at Wimbledon.

“I was just trying to focus on my game and go on the court,” Ostapenko said after his win over Giorgi. “It was before my service, somebody started coughing. I think it’s a bit, how do you say, unlicensed. You are at such a high level, and a tournament like Wimbledon, a Grand Slam, I think people have to understand where they are. “

Soribes Tormo will face seventh seed Aryan Sabalenka in the next round.
