Teachers’ Union returns Corey Johnson for comptroller

The teachers’ union supported Council President Corey Johnson for the city’s comptroller.

Michael Mulgrey, president of the United Federation of Teachers, said on Wednesday, “In particular, our committees referred to Corey Johnson’s long-standing support of public education and his ability to work the city’s government on behalf of working families.” “

Johnson, a counselor representing parts of Manhattan’s lower West Side and Midtown, has been the leader of the council since 2018.

The council speaker planned to run for mayor in September last year, citing mental health challenges including a deputy.

He was a late entrant in the race for the comptroller – but has also included the support of the UFT as well as some other major unions representing the government and private sector workforce: Hotel Trades Council, District Council 37, and SEIU Local 1199 and 32 BJ and Transport Workers Union.

Other Democratic candidates in the race include former financial journalist and CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Kabera, Brooklyn Councilman Brad Lander, Queens Assemblyman David Veprin, Harlem Sen. Brian Benjamin, Brooklyn Sen, Kevin Parker and former Marine Zachary Iscoll.

The winner will succeed current city comptroller Scott Stringer, who is term-limited and running for mayor. The UFT endorsed Stringer for mayor and has stood by him after he was accused of sexual misconduct by a former campaign volunteer during an earlier campaign twenty years ago. Stringer refutes the claim made by Gene Kim.

Primary elections for the city race, including the comptroller, will be held on June 22.
