House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy will lead a delegation of Republican lawmakers on a tour of the US-Mexico border on Monday, raising heat on President Biden to take action on the growing humanitarian crisis.
Thousands of Central American migrants have climbed the crossing since Biden’s inauguration. It has increased border security and created a logjam that holds thousands of ineligible children in cramped, prison-like confinement facilities while awaiting transfer to federal shelters.
Many of the migrants are testing positive for COVID-19, refusing to stay in hotel rooms when they are placed in border cities – except for locals, According to a post McCarthy (R-California.) Preview of the trip on the official website.
“[T]Hayes are American citizens who are entitled to safety and security just like any other American. “The post states that there is mention of the local people of the border area who say that the increase has led to an increase in crime. “The border may be thousands of miles from Washington, but their stories need to be told – and lawmakers and the Biden administration need to hear them.”
Since Biden took office and worked to roll back the more stringent immigration policies of his predecessor, President Donald Trump, deportations have fallen due to arrests by federal immigration and customs enforcement.
Earlier this month, McCarthy said he had sent a letter to Biden requesting a meeting on the border crisis, but he also did not receive a response.
Federal coordinator for the border, Roberta Jacobson, has acknowledged that the Biden administration may have contributed to sending mixed messages, and White House press secretary Jane Saki has acknowledged that the administration could do more to curb the influx of migrants is.
But both have refused to characterize the spiral situation as a crisis.
