DC Comics Justice League # 59 is the first for well-known author Brian Bendis

With sneer cut Justice League Hitting Max HBO this week, there has been a lot of debate about what DC has been righting for as the biggest names while also finding an exciting way for individuals to portray their epic prowess. Is the Justice League good?

The story of Bendis suffers from a heavy burden of setup. Aside from a very fun fight scene, much of the issue seems like an exposure dump for both the plot and theme that this run is going to explore. This said, it puts Bendis to rest on one of the biggest concerns with handling the Justice League: his ability to give unique voices to the characters.

Much depth and consideration is given to how union members clash in both physical and social ways. Bendis’ experience with Superman shines through, whether he is showing a heavy burden, he serves as the moral center and most powerful member of the league, or his desire to always try diplomacy, even as the conflict develops into ruin Doomed to happen.

Bendis also appears to have a solid grip on the other members of the league, whether it is about lab coat-wearing Barry Allen Hockinggirl’s Noth Metal, Batman yelling at Clark while commanding a mission, or if the Green Army said With Superman agreeing, he doesn’t care about anyone else’s opinion. The league the new bad guy is facing seems very normal, but if the team’s fundamentals are strong, I want to stick with it and see how things develop.

The Justice League Dark story is far more fun, providing some endearing chemistry between Zatanna and John. It’s using a lot of exposure to set up a new big bad, but the mix of mythology, biblical apocalypse, comic book lore and occultism is pure Justice League Dark, and it works. The backup feature advances its theatrical story by lowering expectations.

It also helps that German’s art is absolutely gorgeous, showing a mastery of dealing with wildly varying influences from Arthurian legend to German death metal. The stories of V and Bendis are definitely going to intersect at some point, but now I’m more interested in continuing the backup story than the primary story.
