Travis Scott will pay for the funerals for the eight people who died at the Astroworld Festival in Houston over the weekend and offer free mental health care and additional aid to those impacted by the tragedy, his management team announced Monday.
The “Sicko Mode” star will pay for the services out of his own pocket and provide whatever’s necessary to the families to ensure they can have a proper burial with no questions asked, sources close to the rapper added to TMZ.
Scott, 30, is facing widespread condemnation for the tragedy that left eight dead and hundreds injured after he was accused of continuing his set, even as unconscious bodies were pulled from the crowd, and not doing enough to stop the show.
Scott has said he’s devastated over what happened and is taking his commitment to making things right a step further by partnering with mental he alth provider BetterHealth to offer free, one-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist to those affected by the tragedy.
“Travis remains in active conversations with the city of Houston, law enforcement and local first responders to respectfully and appropriately connect with the individuals and families of those involved,” Scott’s team said in a statement.
“These are the first of many steps Travis plans on taking as a part of his personal vow to assist those affected throughout their grieving and recovery process.”
The star is also working closely with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Mental Health America National and MHA’s Greater Houston chapter to direct people who are in need of services.
“NAMI’s Greater Houston chapter will direct incoming callers to the BetterHelp portal established via this partnership and ensure access to various counseling services, psychoeducation, community-based healing circles, support groups, and other related services,” Scott’s team said.
“Travis is grateful to be working alongside BetterHelp, a renowned mental health service provider and to be able to quickly provide this fundamental care and support. Further relief efforts to be announced in the coming days and weeks.”
On Friday night, crowd conditions at the rapper’s festival became out of control, causing fans to fall over and get trampled with some reporting the pit was so tight, they were unable to breathe.
