Vice President Harris made a somber stop at Paris’ cafe Le Carillon Saturday to mark the sixth anniversary of an ISIS terrorist attack which which left 130 dead.
Harris placed white flowers at a memorial for the victims and was accompanied by her husband, second gentleman Doug Emhoff. The couple later chatted with people inside the cafe, which was decorated with colored candles.
The popular neighborhood eatery was one of six locations targeted on Nov. 13, 2015 by terrorists. The gunman killed 13 there and at the neighboring restaurant Le Petit Cambodge. At the same time, the terrorists invaded the Bataclan theatre during a concert, ultimately leaving 90 dead inside the performance space, while suicide bombers targeted the Stade de France during a soccer match.
It was the deadliest terrorist attack in France since World War II.
After leaving the cafe, Harris next visited E. Dehillerin Cookware Shop “to buy a pot,” which she said she planned to use during her own personal Thanksgiving celebration.
Harris has been in France since Tuesday in an effort to help mend fences over a submarine sale to Australia, which resulted in a cancelled French contract for the job. She met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday and posed for smiling photos with him.
“It was a very productive and a good trip and we have a lot of follow up to do,” Harris told reporters Saturday. “As we discussed extensively over the past couple of days this trip was about, of course, making clear the long standing relationship, but also that as we go into a new era for the world, that our work will continue and we do it with a sense of optimism, but a sense of strong conviction that the partnership between the United States and France remains and will continue to be a very strong one.”
