Treason charges may be reduced in capital riot cases: Prosecutor

On Sunday, it was said that many rioters who raided the US Capitol in January could face charges of treason.

Michael Sherwin told CBS “60 Minutes” that he believes the evidence supports charging some suspects in the murderous attack with the plot to overthrow the government.

“I personally believe that the evidence is moving towards that, and perhaps meets those elements,” Sherwin Said on the show.

“I believe the facts support those allegations. He said that as we go on, more facts will support what he said.

Sherwin said that more than 400 criminal cases have been reported so far in the investigation of the riots.

Of those, about 100 have been charged with assaulting law enforcement officers, including Brian Siknik, a Capitol police officer who died in hospital the day after the riots.

Sherwin said that so far only 10 percent of the cases have been related to more complex conspiracies, which are related to far-right extremist groups.

Sherwin, who recently moved on from monitoring the investigation, also reiterated that prosecutors were looking into former President Donald Trump’s conduct in connection with the attack.

“It’s disproportionate that Trump was the magnet that brought people to DC on the 6th. Now the question is, is he the culprit for everything that happened during the siege, during the breech?” Sherwin said.

“We have people watching everything.”
