Former Unified Heavyweight Champion Andy Ruiz Jr. will return to the boxing ring for the first time in a year when he faces Chris Arrella, a former title challenger, at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Ruiz (33-2, 22 KO) last clashed in December 2019 when he came up short in his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight title defenses against Anthony Joshua. He lost a unanimous decision in a much awaited rematch at Dariya Arena in Dariyah, Saudi Arabia. The fight took place six months later when Ruiz shocked the world and stopped Joshua in the seventh round and became the unified champion and handed Joshua his first defeat as a professional.
Since the loss, Ruiz opted to leave long-time trainer Manny Robles and join forces with Eddie Renoso, who also trains Canelo Alvarez, Oscar Valdez and Ryan Garcia. Not only that, Ruiz has lost a significant amount of weight and appears to be in the best shape of his life heading into a fight with Arrela.
Arreola (38-6-1, 33 KOs and 2 no contests) has long been a fan favorite due to its all-action style. Unfortunately, he has often fallen short of championship opportunities with the loss of Deonte Wilder, Barme Stivernay, Tomasz Adamek and Vitaly Klitschko. The 40-year-old knows if it is now or never, if he ever plans to take another shot at a championship. Can he be upset?
