Even though Charlie Puth’s next single is titled “That’s Hilarious,” it will document the “worst breakup” of his life.
“I’m really excited for the song to come out, but every time I hear it, I’m kind of brought back to a time that was really, really, really challenging in my life,” the singer said in a shaky voice in a TikTok video posted Wednesday.
“It just rears its ugly head every time — sorry — every time that I hear it,” he continued, pausing to wipe tears from his eyes.
Puth, 30, candidly explained that 2019 was the “f–kin’ worst year” of his life.
While he did not name her in the emotional video, the songwriter’s relationship with model and fellow pop star Charlotte Lawrence ended in 2019.
“I never told people what happened to me and the pain that I went through going through the worst breakup of my life in 2019,” he continued.
“I just wanted to throw it under the carpet and just start over and surround myself with better people.”
Regardless, the Grammy nominee emphasized that he is “really excited” for his fans to hear the track when it is released in April.
“This is the hardest song that I ever had to put together, and I’m so excited for you to hear it, OK? So, thank you,” he concluded the video.
Puth made his relationship with Lawrence, now 21, Instagram-official on Valentine’s Day 2019 with a sweet black-and-white mirror selfie of the two.
Seven months later, Puth confirmed that they had called it quits.
“Only because I want ppl to stop asking the question….Yes I am single now…and please dont believe everything you read…thank you,” he tweeted in September 2019.
It appears Puth — who briefly dated “We Don’t Talk Anymore” collaborator Selena Gomez in 2016 — has not had a serious relationship since the split. Lawrence, for her part, was romantically linked to music producer and Rita Ora’s ex Andrew Watt last summer.
