Diamondbacks coach Dave McKay cuts spleen in dugout

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona Diamondbacks first base coach Dave McKay suffered a broken rib and lacquered spleen after a fall in the dugout earlier this week.

Diamondbacks manager Tori Lovullo said 70-year-old McKay was wearing a new pair of shoes on Tuesday, slipped to the bottom of the dugout and fell on the bench during a game against the San Francisco Giants. He recovered quickly and started living in the park, but on Wednesday morning he began to have more pain and only then the extent of the injury was revealed.

“He’s fine, everything is good,” Lovullo said on Friday. “He just needs to get away.”

Lovullo said that McKay was “resting comfortably” and that “there was a small procedure to ease the spleen” and that everything is just a thumbs up. “

Lovello said he expected McKay to be away from the team for about a week, but that he should be able to stay with the team by opening day on April 1.
