Mayor Aashiq Eric Adams is worried about the wealthy New Yorkers fleeing the city – and says a safer, cleaner city will help keep them here.
“I didn’t join the chorus which tells 65,000 New Yorkers who are paying 51 percent of our income tax – and [are] Only 2 percent of income tax filers – I am not included in the chorus which states, ‘So what if they leave?’
“I am the exact opposite. I join the chorus that tells them, ‘We need you here,’ Adams said, in a subtle dig at leftist advocates and politicians pushing higher taxes in the region.
But the president of the Brooklyn Borough blamed the wealthier residents for leaving the city with higher taxes – but rising crime and filthy alleys.
“When I talk to my high-income people, they basically say they are running away because the city has become very dirty, very insecure, and the commitment to the city is not appreciated,” he said .
“I am going to change that narrative by making my city safe. We are going to have a clean city, and we applaud all New Yorkers, including our high-income people. “
Adams said New York City has become a “bad place”.
“In two years of my administration, you are going to see a different city, where we are a clean city,” he told Catsimetidis.
The June 2021 Democratic primary will be the first city election to use the new rank-choice voting system.
For the Mayor of New York and other offices, a maximum of five candidates will be able to choose their choice. For the first time, ballots in the second, third, fourth and fifth choice will be lengthened, eliminating the need for runoff elections.
