Five people injured in New Zealand supermarket attack

Authorities said five people were injured in a Monday attack in a New Zealand supermarket.

Two workers at the Countdown supermarket in Dunedin City were among those injured by a suspect, who was later taken into custody by police.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the stabbing does not appear to be an act of domestic terrorism, but a motive is unclear.

The victims suffered wounds or related injuries. They were all taken to Dunedin Hospital.

Witnesses told local media that several heroic shopkeepers tried to subdue the suspect, some of whom were injured in the process.

“We are shocked and devastated by the events at our Dunedin Central store this afternoon,” Countdown said in a statement.

“Our priority right now is the members of our injured team and taking care of our extensive team in view of this very painful incident. We are deeply troubled that customers who tried to help our team members were also injured. “

More information about the stabbing attack was expected to be released by police on Monday.
