Daniel Carlson was seemingly surprised as anyone that the Raiders were going to attempt a game-winning field goal on second down in overtime against the Ravens.
After a Lamar Jackson turnover, the Raiders took the ball over at the Ravens’ 27-yard-line. After a one-yard run by Kenyan Drake, Raiders coach Jon Gruden decided to attempt a 43-yard field goal.
There was just one problem.
“Our kicker was warming up in the net,” Gruden told reporters. “No one could find him.”
That led to a delay of game penalty, and Gruden decided to pull the special teams unit back off the field to run an offensive play. That play turned out to be a beautifully lofted touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Zay Jones for a wild 33-27 Raiders win.
“I didn’t know what happened,” Carr said of Carlson, who previously kicked a 54-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.
“I turned my back and I was just praying we made it. I turned around and it was a delay of game. I was like ‘OK, he can still make this.’ Then it’s ‘Get back out there!’ I hear in my headset, coach calling personnel, so I start running back out there.”
