Jimmy Garoppolo takes the 49ers’ Trey Lance draft drama quite well

Jimmy Garrappolo is handling his now precarious situation better than most will.

He is not angry with the 49ers for grooming Trey Lance. He credited General Manager John Lynch for being up front with him. And he is excited for the chance to be a starter in San Francisco.

“Once he said that you would have the opportunity to start this year and fight it, I was ready for it,” He said on CBS radio Lance was taken third overall by the 49ers on Thursday night since his first public comment. “I’m ready for the competition and here we are.”

Asked about the fact that he led the 49ers to the Super Bowl two years ago and now has to fight for an opening act, Garapolo dismissed any bitterness that he is feeling.

“My dad is an electrician, grew up in a blue-collar house – that’s one of the things you have to roll with punches,” he said. “Whatever opportunity presents itself, you have to be ready to take advantage of it.

He said, “This is what I have done throughout my career and I will keep doing it. Like my father said, ‘I will not be given anything.’ Nothing will be given to anyone in this league. You have to go there and work. “

49-year-old coach Kyle Sheenahan made headlines before the draft when asked if Garoppolo would remain with the team even after that, saying he could not guarantee anyone to be alive. Garapolo gave him a pass.

“I know Kyle well, and I knew what he was trying to say when he said that,” he said. “I don’t know if he said it correctly, but I definitely knew what he was trying to say.”
