Here’s every word of Glazer’s letter to fans:

“To all Manchester United supporters,

“In the last few days, we have all seen the passion that makes football and our fans have a deep loyalty to this great club.

“You have made your opposition to the European Super League clear, and we have listened. We got it wrong, and we want to show that we can keep things right.

“Although the wounds are raw and I understand that the stain will take time to heal, I am personally committed to rebuilding trust with my fans and learning from the message you convey with such conviction.

“We believe that European football needs to become more sustainable in the pyramid in the long run. However, we fully accept that the Super League was not the right way to go about it.

“In seeking to build a more stable foundation for the game, we failed to show enough respect for its deeply rooted traditions — counter-allegations, accusations, pyramids — and we are sorry for that.

“It is the largest football club in the world and we unreservedly apologize for the unrest that has taken place during these last few days.

It is right for us.

“Manchester United has a rich heritage and we understand our responsibility to live up to our great traditions and values.

“The epidemic has given rise to many unique challenges and the way we are proud of Manchester United and its fans around the world and Manchester fans have reacted to the enormous pressures during this period.

“We also realize that we need to communicate better with our fans, because you will always be in the heart of the club.

“In the background, you can ensure that we are taking the necessary steps to rebuild relationships with other stakeholders in sports with a view to working together on solutions to long-term challenges facing the football pyramid.

He said, “At the moment our priority is to continue supporting all our teams as they are pushing for the strongest possible finish of the season. In closing, I would like to recognize that it is your support that makes this club so great, and we thank you for that.

“Best regards, with Joel Glazer.”

How long have the Glazers been at Old Trafford?

The Glazer family bought the club in 2005 thanks to several debts, which meant that their debt was brought under protest as the club was burdened.

The fall-out was so severe that some fans decided that they would no longer support United and set up FC of their own club, Manchester United.

The family is rarely seen in the game and this statement is only the second time they have spoken to fans about their 16-year ownership.

What next for the European Super League?

After doing the same with all six Premier League clubs on Tuesday and other European clubs on Wednesday, the initial offer which was submitted over the weekend has been turned down.

However, it is understood that further negotiations are likely to occur as a separate European club concept. Clubs feel that a more sustainable approach is needed to protect the future of the game going beyond the new format for the Champions League.
