It has been 20 years since Brewster made his debut as Mia Toretto in the first “Fast and Furious” film. In June she returns for “F9”, her sixth appearance in the biceps-and-bullet franchise and is expected to end the saga in the first three films.
After sitting out 2017’s “The Fate of the Furious”, Mia joins brothers Dom (Vin Diesel) and their usual crew – Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Roman (Tyris Gibson) and Tej (Chris “Ludacris / Bridges) Goes to take down the long-lost Toretto brother (John Cena), who is trying to acquire a powerful cyber-weapon.
In the last eight films, a lot of butt-kicking has been omitted. “I got to do a lot of physical stuff in that show,” she says.
“And then I started taking Taekwondo lessons and I would send Justin my training videos. And then I would send him videos of me wearing a ski mask on a ‘Magnum’ set and holding a gun. I was like, ‘Looks so bad[ass], right?’ “
Brewster then worked with a stunt team for weeks in “F9” for his big fight scene.
“I’m nerd preparing carefully,” she says. “And once we were on the set, Michelle showed up two days ago, and she’s like, ‘Yeah, I get it. It’s nothing.'”
But Brewster’s belief in “F9” is still light-years from where it was for the original 2001 film. “I think I came to that set and I was really intimidated by everyone, especially Michelle, because Michelle is so strong and so comfortable that she is saying her thing,” Brewster says.
“I was a little bit shy and timid.”
She was not particularly confident of the film’s title so far – preferring her original “radal in” moniker.
“When I heard the title change I didn’t think it was going to work,” she recalls with a laugh. “Now I look back and say, ‘Wow, what’s the matter.” “
The new title actually proved to be a solid one, and the franchise has helped make a name for a girl who has grown up who wants to act.
Brewster was born in 1980 to a father who worked in finance and a mother who was a model. He spent much of his early childhood in Brazil.
The family moved to New York City when Brewster was 10 years old.
She attended Fifth Heart’s Upper East Side Religious School Convent of the Sacred Heart near her family’s apartment and at 102nd Street. “I just felt like an outsider,” she recalls. “I felt that I brought the wrong lunch to school. I felt as if all the other girls were shaving their legs and I was not cutting my legs because my mother did not let me go. “
When she was 15, she found a passion in acting, acting more passionately. She kept a lower profile while attending Yale, especially after one semester shooting “The Fast and the Furious”.
“I want to differentiate myself a little bit,” she says. “I didn’t really get the college experience of having a lot of fun and going to parties. I was just focused on getting through it. “
