Liverpool fans have the least confidence in Gareth Southgate, study finds

A survey carried out on behalf of bookmaker Paddy Power has discovered that Liverpool supporters have less faith in Gareth Southgate’s ability as England gaffer than any other of the‘Big Six’ fan base.

England are amongst the favourites to win this summer’s European Championships in the Euro 2021 odds. However, it seems that Liverpool fans have little faith in the Three Lions winning anything with Southgate at the wheel.

The study found that almost half(42%) of the Anfield faithful don’t rate Southgate as a manager. Manchester United fans were next in line with 41% of the Red Devils’ supporters claiming to not have confidence in the 50-year-old’s ability, whilst Arsenal (35%), Chelsea (33%) and Tottenham fans (33%) seem to have much more faith in the waistcoat-wearing manager.

Given Southgate’s decision to leave Trent Alexander-Arnold out of his last England squad to face San Marino, Albania and Poland back in March, along with the rumours circling that the 22-year-old will also be absent from the 26-man squad for the upcoming European Championships, it’s hardly a surprise that he doesn’t have the backing of the Liverpool fan base.

The survey also discovered that fans of the Big Six are less bothered when England lose. When asked to score their disappointment in defeat out of 10, they averaged a score of 4.7, which is somewhatlower than fans from the rest of the Premier League — who scored 5.6 out of 10.

Southgate didn’t do himself any favours in trying to win back the confidence of England supporters when he recently delayed announcing his 26-man squad for Euro 2020, instead releasing a much larger 33-man provisional squad.

Ben White, Ben Godfrey and Aaron Ramsdale were included for the first time, whilst Alexander-Arnold was in fact included despite the speculation that he was (or still is) going to miss out on a place on the plane.

There was no room in the extended squad for the likes of Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford, Leicester City’s James Maddison and Aston Villa’s ErziKonsa, who all enjoyed good seasons with their respective clubs.
