Michael Conforto catches superb catch to back up Jacob Degrom

Michael Conforto’s catch became even greater as the game began on Sunday, reaching the fifth inning with the 12th Diamondbacks, but regretted that the haste would not have historical significance.

Jacob Degrom allowed three moves and a double in the fifth and departed before the next inning with a right-hand tightness. But Conforto’s circus catch in the second inning, extending his field to the right-field fence on Eduardo Escobar’s drive, was nonetheless impressive.

“I felt like it was low enough that I was going to get a chance to go there,” Conforto said after the Mets’ 4–2 win at Citi Field. “It was right on top of my head, which allowed me to go back over the fence and I took a little quick glance to see where I was.

“When the ball went up I felt like I could catch and I needed to catch up because when Jake is on the mound there might be one or two barreled balls that go up and you want to make those plays for him . They are big plays with Jake on the mound. “

In the fifth, Conforto and Kevin Pilar converted Stephen Vogt’s drive to right-center, but the ball landed for a double between the diving outfielders. It was the only hit surrendered by Degrom.

“I was finally calling it too late,” Conforto said. “I never called her and we were both pigeons at the same time. [Pillar’s] Head hit my calf and it hit very hard and I could tell that it felt to me that it would probably shake him very well… he was definitely shaken. “

Pillar remained in the game.

“I wish we could get that ball,” Conforto said. “But it completely divided us right there.”

Drew Smith was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse before the game and opted for Mets Trevor Hildenberger. Smith, a right-hander, began the season on the injured list after suffering a shoulder injury during spring training.

The Mets extended their winning rhythm to 10 games against the Diamondbacks at City Fields. This is the ninth time in franchise history the Mets have won 10 straight games or more at home against an opponent.
