Nikim Mekins back in jail after accidentally released from Rikers

A 22-year-old man accused of attempted murder, who was released from Rikers Island by mistake, is behind bars.

The Post was quoted as saying that Nikim Meckins returned to prison at midnight with his lawyer, Lucian Shalfen.

According to court records, the suspect was arrested on March 10 on charges of felony during a shooting and was released on $ 30,000 bail.

A court spokesman said he appeared in the Bronx court room on Monday, when bail was reduced to $ 1 and a pending indictment on the murder charge was filed.

The spokesman said the clerk mistakenly released Mickins in a murder case instead of holding him on $ 300,000 bail.

“The clerk correctly rejected the paperwork as a $ 1 bail in the gun case, but mistakenly gave the ROR the wrong indication in the murder case,” he said.

The judge issued a bench warrant for Meckins after explaining the error.

A spokesman for the city Department of Corrections, Peter Thorne, said in a statement that “based on the documentation provided by the courts, the release from custody was appropriate and in accordance with our policy.”

Last week, it also surfaced that a clerical error left 26-year-old Christopher Buggs, who was awaiting trial in the 2018 Brooklyn homicide.
