Portland’s demonstration began in a peaceful manner on Saturday, police said, adding about 100 people gathered in the city, including a federal immigration and customs enforcement facility.
But the gatherings – about 30 people near the ICE facility and about 100 – at Shemonski Park – grew increasingly violent by 10 a.m. The crowd broke windows and sprayed graffiti as it headed toward City Hall, Fox News reports.
Police eventually announced a riot, with arrests occurring after 11 a.m., Fox said.
Among them was 22, Jeremiah Day, who ran from the police, but the bike was found by police – and allegedly drew a butterfly knife at the officers before being busted.
“Once again, under the cover of darkness, several dozen people decided to damage and destroy several businesses in our downtown area, resulting in a riot,” Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovewell Said in a statement on sunday.
“The situation became extremely dangerous when a man shot a knife at the officers when the officers were just doing their job,” the chief said. “The authorities have exercised restraint and professionalism and have caught the suspect safely.”
Other protesters were charged with criminal mischief and arrest, including a 36-year-old woman with spray spray, gas mask and helmet, police said.
Another guard was carrying a baseball bat and a knife, and wore body armor, police said.
Meanwhile, police in Seattle, Washington said that 14 people were arrested while observing the May Day protesters. Stop traffic and confront the police, Fox said.
