Calais Calmpbell returns to Ravens on two-year deal

The Ravens gave their defensive line a boost on Saturday, re-signing defensive end Calais Campbell to a two-year deal, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Campbell, 35, had considered retirement but ultimately opted to return in order to chase a first-ever Super Bowl ring. His deal is worth $12.5 million but could be pushed up to $16.5 million with incentives, per Schefter.

Campbell is the second player the Ravens have brought back in as many days from their defense, which struggled last season. Middle linebacker Josh Bynes also re-signed on Friday.

Though Campbell has traditionally been a strong pass rusher, he had just 1.5 sacks last season. He did play well on run defense, though, and finished with 49 tackles.

“I have a lot of admiration for Calais as a person and as a player and as a leader,” Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said after the season. “He’s a guy that plays winning football and he does that as much for the team and the organization in the building as he does on the field. I have a lot of respect for him.”

Campbell has been in the league since 2008 and is a member of the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade team.

Lamar Jackson amid contract uncertainty: ‘I love my Ravens’

    [ad_1]

BALTIMORE — Lamar Jackson said on Twitter on Wednesday that he loves the Baltimore Ravens amid uncertainty about his contract status beyond this year.

“I love my Ravens I don’t know who the hell putting that false narrative out that I’m having thoughts about leaving,” Jackson said. “Stop tryna read my mind.”

Jackson’s contract is an issue in Baltimore for a second straight offseason. The team still hasn’t signed him to an extension as he enters next season on his fifth-year option. General manager Eric DeCosta said last month the Ravens were working at Jackson’s pace.

Baltimore was decimated by injuries — including to Jackson himself — and finished 8-9 last season.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens have signed coach John Harbaugh to a three-year contract extension through 2025.

The Ravens announced the move Tuesday. Harbaugh is entering his 15th season at the helm. Baltimore went 8-9 in 2021 — only the second losing record of his tenure — when injures derailed what looked like a promising season.

The Ravens are 148-96 under Harbaugh, including an 11-8 mark in the postseason that is highlighted by a Super Bowl victory at the end of the 2012 season. He also guided Baltimore to the AFC title game in 2008 and 2011.

Harbaugh was the AP’s NFL coach of the year in 2019.

Where will Antonio Brown play in 2022? Receiver says he wants to join Lamar Jackson, Ravens

    [ad_1]

If Antonio Brown plays in the NFL next season, it sounds like the wide receiver would prefer to be with the Ravens.

Brown appeared on Monday’s “I Am Athlete” podcast and host Brandon Marshall asked him where he would he would want to play next. Instead of saying a team, Brown shared which quarterback he wants to play with: Lamar Jackson.

“Action Jackson,” Brown said. “Let’s give Lamar Jackson his flowers. … Shout out Lamar Jackson. That’s it. Lamar Jackson is a great quarterback. Not only him throwing the ball, the dynamic of him playing, the excitement.”

MORE: Antonio Brown trolls Buccaneers on Twitter after playoff loss to Rams

Jackson added to the conversation by retweeting the video of Brown’s interview and putting a devil emoji with the post.

MORE: Antonio Brown insists ‘there’s nothing wrong with my mental health’

This speculation comes just weeks after Brown ended his career in Tampa Bay by taking off his jersey and running off the field in the middle of the Buccaneers’ game against the Jets. Since then, there have been questions about whether or not Brown will continue playing in the NFL.

Any team that does pick him up will need to accept Brown’s history of finding controversy on and off the field, but the Ravens reportedly have considered signing Brown before.

Brown’s cousin is Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, a wide receiver for the Ravens. So, Brown has been around the Ravens organization in the past, and he even worked out with Jackson in April 2020.

Asked about the receiver later that summer, Jackson said: “It was nice throwing to Antonio Brown. I was hoping we would get him. I’m still hoping — a little bit.”

Brown would of course end up signing with Tampa Bay, but he and Jackson might get another chance to play together.

  • Ravens playoff picture: How Baltimore can clinch AFC wild-card spot in Week 18

Ravens playoff picture: How Baltimore can clinch AFC wild-card spot in Week 18

    [ad_1]

The Ravens began the season 8-3 and looked like the team to beat in the AFC North. However, they have fallen flat during the last five games, all losses, and now face an uphill battle to reach the postseason.

The Bengals wrapped up the AFC North with a win over the Chiefs last week so now, the Ravens’ only hope is to get the final AFC Wild Card spot. They will need to win to have a shot at it, but they are relying on many other results to help get them there.

The team is also dealing with numerous injuries. They have lost key playmakers in the secondary, an entire stable of running backs and Lamar Jackson, who has recently dealt with an ankle injury. Baltimore has also dropped a couple of games by one point thanks to failed two-point conversions late, so had they converted even one of them, their chances of making the postseason would be better.

Baltimore remains alive in the playoff race, but they are decidedly long shots. Here’s what needs to happen for the Ravens to make the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

WEEK 18 PICKS: Against the spread | Straight up

    1. The Ravens must beat the Steelers

Obviously, the Ravens need to win to make the playoffs. After all, they are 8-8 and are behind several teams in the AFC Wild Card race. That includes the team they’re playing, the Steelers, who sport an 8-7-1 record.

The Ravens lost by one point to Pittsburgh earlier in the season after Lamar Jackson failed to connect with Mark Andrews on a potential game-winning two-point conversion. They will be out for revenge in this one. If they can win the 1 p.m. ET game, they may have a chance to stay in the AFC playoff race at least a little while longer, though they’ll need some help to leapfrog into the final Wild Card spot.

NFL MOCK DRAFT: Ravens go defense in SN’s latest mock

    2. The Chargers and Colts must both lose

The second element of this equation for the Ravens is to create a three-way tie with the Chargers and Colts for the final playoff spot.

The NFL tiebreak rules for three-way ties can get complex, but in this case, they are simple. The Ravens have beaten both the Chargers and Colts head-to-head. As such, they have completed a “season sweep” of the two, and that would catapult them ahead of both and lock them into that No. 7 seed for the postseason.

Of course, that may prove easier said than done. The Chargers are slight favorites over the Raiders, so perhaps they could lose, but the Colts are 15.5-point favorites over the Jaguars. Indianapolis hasn’t won in Jacksonville since 2014, so history may be on the Ravens’ side there, but the 2021 Jaguars have won just two games and are on an eight-game losing streak. Still, it’s at least possible.

    3. The Dolphins must lose or tie against the Patriots

This is the final complicating matter for the Ravens. If they can win and see both the Chargers and Colts lose, they won’t be guaranteed a playoff spot. They still need the Dolphins not to win against the Patriots.

Why is that? Well, if the Dolphins win, they will have a 9-8 record, which would force a four-way tie for the final playoff spot with the Colts, Chargers, Ravens and Dolphins. The Ravens would no longer own the tiebreak, as they lost head-to-head against Miami so they don’t maintain the “season sweep” over all three teams. Instead, the Colts, who would own the superior conference record at 7-5, would make it in.

Long story short, the Ravens can make the playoffs. It just might be difficult for them to actually do so, as three other teams are in control of their destiny.

What channel is Steelers vs. Ravens on today? Time, TV schedule for NFL Week 18 game

    [ad_1]

It’s a bit wild to be talking about this game as a potentially meaningless one once the dust settles on Sunday. Neither the Steelers (8-7-1) nor Ravens (8-8) can get into the playoffs without help. But the loser of this Week 18 AFC North showdown doesn’t have a chance to get in. That means that for the Steelers, this could be Ben Roethlisberger’s last game in black & gold. For the Ravens, it will be up to Tyler Huntley to get them a win to end the year.

Lamar Jackson will be held out for his fifth straight game with a lingering ankle injury, leaving the Ravens shorthanded once again. The Ravens are 0-4 in their last four with Huntley at the helm, losing three of those games (to the Browns, Packers and Rams) by a combined four points. The outlier is a 41-21 walloping taken at the hands of Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and the formidable Bengals. Should the Ravens win, they would need a Colts loss to the Jaguars, a Chargers loss to the Raiders, and a Dolphins loss or tie to the Patriots.

For the Steelers, the path forward is a bit less unlikely – albeit barely as it still hinges on a Colts loss to the Jaguars. They would need the Colts to lose and the Raiders and Chargers to not end in a tie, making it still a longshot, but not completely insane.

All things told, this will likely end up a disappointing season for both of these teams. Once the offseason begins, however, the tones will be very different. For the Ravens, it will be about reloading and preparing for the return of their star quarterback. While Huntley hasn’t been horrible, he hasn’t had that key moment like Jackson’s touchdown against the Chiefs. Even one of those moments changes the landscape for the Ravens significantly this week. The Steelers, meanwhile, go into an offseason with the looming question of who their new quarterback will be. That question will ultimately be a determinant factor in how their 2022 goes, so it’s a huge decision for Steelers GM Kevin Colbert.

  • Lamar Jackson injury update: Ravens QB to miss Week 18 game vs. Steelers, possibly ending season

Lamar Jackson injury update: Ravens QB to miss Week 18 game vs. Steelers, possibly ending season

    [ad_1]

Barring a miracle, Lamar Jackson’s 2021 season is over.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh announced during his Friday press conference that Tyler Huntley would be the starter for Baltimore against the Steelers on Sunday, and the team’s injury report listed Jackson as out for the regular-season finale.

NFL Week 18 picks: Straight up | Against the spread

Jackson has not played since being carted off the field with an ankle injury during the team’s Week 14 loss to the Browns and did not practice this week.

The week before Jackson’s injury, the Ravens fell to the Steelers 20-19 when Baltimore scored a late touchdown that would have tied the game with a made point-after try, but instead the Ravens went for two to try and take a 21-20 lead, and the attempt came up short.

To keep their season alive and give Jackson a chance to return, the Ravens will need to beat the Steelers this time and get some help from other teams. They would need the Patriots to beat or tie the Dolphins. They also need to hope that the Raiders can beat the Chargers on “Sunday Night Football.” And perhaps the tallest task, they need the Jaguars to beat the Colts.

With all that taking place, the Ravens would sneak into the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in the AFC, setting up a wild-card matchup against the AFC’s No. 2 team.

If Baltimore cannot get all the results to fall its way this weekend, Jackson will have to wait until 2022 to appear again in a Ravens uniform. He would finish the regular season with a 7-5 record, a completion percentage of 64.4 percent, 16 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He also has rushed 133 times for 767 yards and two more touchdowns.

    MORE: Baker Mayfield trade rumors

Huntley has proven himself more than adequate filling in for Jackson as the starting quarterback. Huntley turned in a stellar performance against the Packers in his first start for Baltimore in Week 15, passing for 215 yards, two touchdowns and rushing for 73 yards and two scores. Overall on the year, he has completed 67.5 percent of his passes for 940 yards, three touchdowns and two picks with 222 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

If Baltimore misses the playoffs, it will be the first time in four years that the Ravens are not among the last teams vying for a Super Bowl. They were division champions in 2018 and 2019 and made it to the playoffs as a wild-card team in 2020. It will also be the first time during that span that the Ravens (8-8) haven’t tallied at least 10 wins.

The Los Angeles Rams rebounded in a big way from a winless November in December. They had a get-right game against the Jaguars and never looked back, winning four straight games to get back to the top of the NFC West. Despite a brutal performance from Matthew Stafford against the Vikings, Sony Michel, the defense, and special teams were able to help pull out a 30-23 win for Los Angeles. It’s a testament to the depth of the Rams that they can win despite three picks from their quarterback.

With that being said, that won’t fly against a team built like the Ravens, who thrive off of opponents’ mistakes. However, the Ravens have dropped four straight games, with three of those losses coming against division rivals. That won’t cut it in a race as tight as the AFC North, and they’ve now found themselves 8-7 on the outside looking in of the AFC playoff picture. Where it looked at one point like the division was theirs to lose, the wheels completely fell off for the Ravens in December, so they’re now playing for their playoff lives while also hoping for help.

Of course, the Ravens have had the deck stacked against them. The team has been embattled by COVID and injuries, and third stringer Josh Johnson started last week against the Bengals with Lamar Jackson out with an ankle injury and Tyler Huntley out due to COVID. A team led by Joe Burrow clearly has the advantage in that matchup, and when the Ravens go down early they’re forced to go against-type. That’s always been the concern with Baltimore, and we’ve watched it come to fruition over the course of this losing streak.

Jackson returned to practice for the Ravens on Wednesday, but a noticeable limp had him limited and he missed Thursday and Friday’s practices. While the Ravens would love to get him back on the field, a Jackson who can’t run doesn’t open the offense up that much. But with Sunday being effectively a must-win game for the Ravens, it would behoove them to have their former MVP on the field if possible. If he can’t play, Huntley should be a go for Baltimore.

Rams’ Jalen Ramsey takes shot at teammate Taylor Rapp in defensive huddle during rocky first half vs. Ravens

The Rams had a rough first half against the Ravens in Week 17, and NFL fans probably could have seen it coming after the way the game started.

Los Angeles’ troubles began on its first defensive possession. The Rams were able to force the Ravens to punt after seven plays, but tempers boiled over between teammates Taylor Rapp and Jalen Ramsey on the field.

NFL PLAYOFF PICTURE: Where Rams, Ravens rank in playoff race

An incident between the two occurred in the first few minutes of the game when Ramsey and Rapp appeared to be jawing with one another; Ramsey then came over to take a swing at Rapp. He hit him in the facemask with an open hand.

It’s unclear exactly what caused the dispute between Ramsey, a star cornerback, and Rapp, one of the team’s top safeties. The Ravens had two completions of 15 and 13 yards before the fight, so maybe there was an early miscommunication between the two on those plays.

SNF: Meet Sean Mannion, the QB start ing in place of Kirk Cousins

This is the second time in as many weeks that we’ve seen teammates take a shot at one another during a game. The Washington Football Team saw defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne get into it on the bench during their blowout loss to the Cowboys on “Sunday Night Football” when Allen threw a punch at Payne.

That said, the scuffle between Allen and Payne occurred on the bench, while Ramsey and Rapp fought on the field. That’s certainly odd, and it will be interesting to see if either has anything to say about the incident after the game.

Los Angeles’ defense buttoned up despite the early issues in the secondary. The team allowed just 13 points in the first half but trailed 13-7 at halftime as the offense struggled due to a couple of Matthew Stafford interceptions.
