Teen ‘party mom’ gets nine years after bender left baby dead

The UK “party mom” who earned the ire of a nation when she left her baby home alone to die was sentenced to nine years in prison on Friday, according to reports.

Verphy Kudi, now 19, went on a six-day bender in December 2019, traveling 150 miles away from her Brighton home to celebrate her 18th birthday, while her 20-month-old daughter, Asiah, died of neglect, starvation and dehydration. The teen mom pled guilty to manslaughter in March.

Kudi reportedly lied to friends and family about who was caring for the toddler during her trip, then waited hours to call authorities after returning home to find her baby dead, or near death.

Judge Christine Laing painted a painful portrait of the baby’s death during the sentencing.

“Asiah was alone in that flat for six days, less two hours, unable to do anything to draw attention to her plight,” Laing said.

“It’s a particularly distressing aspect of this case that … it’s unlikely that Asiah would have cried for any length of time because she had already learnt that in many occasions there was unlikely to be a response. And when her suffering became too great, she would not have had the strength to cry.”

Reports surfaced that Kudi had left Asiah alone as many as 11 different times during the baby’s short life.

“It’s very clear to the court that you could be very deceitful and manipulative when you wanted to get your way,” the judge said. “It’s abundantly clear from the lies that you told that you knew you should not have left Asiah alone.”

Added police investigator Andy Wolstenholme: “This was a particularly distressing case for my team and me to investigate, and has caused great sorrow amongst Verphy’s family and the many agencies that have supported Verphy and Asiah.
