Firefighters burst into Israel on Saturday amid Palestinian militants on Gaza Strip firing rockets and Israeli forces back at targets operated by the Hamas group.
Violent exchanges took place in East Jerusalem after a clash between Palestinians and the Israeli police, and the most cross-border violence in a few months The Associated Press reported.
At least four police officers and six protesters were injured in the fighting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Israeli officials said 36 rockets were fired into Israel overnight, but there were no reports of any injuries or serious damage. In response, Israel said it targeted several Hamas targets in Gaza, including an underground facility and rocket launchers.
Violence erupted last week after police planted barricades outside Damascus Gate in the Old City, where Muslims traditionally gather after the day’s fast.
Hundreds of Palestinians threw stones and bottles at police on Thursday evening. Israeli soldiers fired a water cannon and stun grenades in an attempt to chase them away. The AP reported that dozens of Palestinians were wounded in the violence.
