Thousands protest Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro’s handling of COVID

Thousands of protestors took to the streets in cities across Brazil, demanding the impeachment of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro over his administration’s handling of the pandemic in Latin America’s largest country.

Bolsonaro, a former army captain, has spent the last year playing down the pandemic that has killed more than 459,000 people in Brazil and infected more than 16 million. The far-right leader has refused to impose curfews and generalized lockdowns in the country of 211 million.

“The Bolsonaro government is more dangerous than the virus, ” said Samara Martins, vice president of the Popular Unity for Socialism, one of several left wing groups that organized protests in state capitals across the country.
