The heavyweight boxing scene got some clarity, but not without some heavy trash talk.
WBC champion Tyson Fury verbally agreed to give Deontay Wilder his rematch and complete their trilogy in a bout tentatively scheduled for July 24 in Las Vegas, according to ESPN. The bout came together after an arbiter ruled last week that Fury was contractually obligated to fight Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KOs). Their 2018 bout went to a draw and Fury won by seventh-round TKO when they squared off again in February 2020.
This trilogy fight was made after Fury announced — prior to the arbiter’s decision — that he and Anthony Joshua, the IBF, WBO and WBA title holder, would hold their unification bout in August in Saudi Arabia. Joshua (24-1, 22 KOs) didn’t take kindly to Thursday’s news.
“Tyson Fury the world now sees you for the fraud you are,” Joshua tweeted Thursday. “You’ve let boxing down. You lied to the fans and led them on. Bring me any championship fighter who can handle their business correctly.”
Fury (30-0-1, 21 KOs) responded by saying Joshua’s team knew about the arbitration and that the decision was “out of his hands.” He then went on to challenge Joshua to a bare knuckles fight this weekend.
“Let’s put up 20 mill each!!!” Fury wrote.
