Yankees’ Nick Nelson Flashing ‘Special Makeover’

TAMPA – Nick Nelson is giving the Yankees something to think about in the short and long term – including whether his outing should be short or long.

The right-handed pitcher on Monday, George M. Steinbrenner turned in two strong relief innings in his spring debut at the field, flashing a fastball that came in at 98 mph and a change that manager Aaron Boone called “a special pitch”.

“Showered what makes him good and it’s a high-octane fastball, but that’s the changeup of his calling card,” said Boone after Yonex’s 5-4 win over the Tigers. “Even when he was behind in the count, he was able to get some important outsiders and some big swings and memories. He made a doubles pitch when needed. Confidence in that change to go with 90s highball is something we really like. I feel like he is moving a little bit in his polish. He and I are definitely excited.

Nelson, 25, made his big league debut last summer, giving up 11 earned runs in 20 ² / before innings before facing a pair of scorched frames in the ALDS against the Rays. Earned’s six runs came in a ferocious performance against the Phillies, with seven of his appearances over an innings.

However, before 2020, Nelson started in 74 games (out of 76) in the minor leagues. That experience gives the Yankees more starting depth, but could be of value again as a reliever.

“Actually with Nelly, I could see any and everything,” Boone said. “I could see him developing as a starter. I am sure that he can affect our bullpen in the short position, but at the same time has the ability to give us innings. He is someone we will continue to talk and talk about a lot and try not only to do the best work for him, but to do the best for us going forward this year. But he is definitely going to consider the plans, I think that will happen at some point.

Boone said he is looking for Nelson to command the strike zone and is continuing to develop his breaking ball – which could go a long way in determining his future role.

“Excited about his continued growth,” Boone said. “There will be a lot of conversation about moving forward.”
