France discovers new COVID-19 variants that survive detection

France has discovered a new COVID-19 variant capable of detecting standard tests for viruses.

The French Ministry of Health said Monday evening that a group of new variant cases had been detected at a hospital in Lanyon in the Brittany area, France 24 reported.

However, many patients tested negative on PRC tests, health officials said.

Researchers at the Institute Pasteur are now considering whether the variants have genetic modifications, which are more difficult to detect, the report said.

Officials said it is potentially harder to trace, but this variant is not more severe or variable than others.

The outlet reported that amid the latest coronovirus growth, the French government has resisted pressure to order a new lockdown.
