Evaluation of Mets’ big roster decisions: Lindor, Wheeler

Jake Odorizzi made public last week that he believed they were going to be a meter when Jared Porter was hired as general manager, and then Zac Scott rode in, first as Porter’s lieutenant Then as their replacement.

The pair did not value Odorzi as Sandy Alderson had when he was briefly a baseball operation. So the Mets tried to make a big deal with Trevor Bauer, and – when the 2020 NL Cy Young Award winner went to the Dodgers – before the Mets finally signed Tazuan Walker to a two-year, $ 20 million contract Consider James Paxton.

So it provides within a game to track how the game compares to Walker, specifically, Odorizzi and Paxton and – to a lesser extent – Bauer. There was a separate financial class for Bauer, with one player later left on the board, for whom Steve Cohen was going to exceed the $ 210 million luxury- threshold in 2021.

Paxton signed for a year at $ 8.5 million to return to his original team, the Mariners. And here’s a larch: I thought the Mets should have signed Paxton. With the Mets scheduled to try to win a title this year, I believed Paxton was worth the risk despite his consistent injury history on a one-year deal, as his stuff was the most in a postson game over Odorzi or Walker. Will play well Paxton faced five batters this season for Seattle to avoid elbow pain, which was necessary for Tommy John’s surgery and his absence, at least, for the rest of this year. If he were with the Mets, it would have been the same with Paxton, who knows?

Thus, we shift to see Odorizzi v. Walker. Odorizzi signed a two-year, $ 20.5 million deal with the Astros, late in his season debut and struggled to make his only start (five runs in 3 ¹ innings against the Tigers). Walker has performed well in two starts as he tries to that he can stay healthy and his talent is in line with his level of talent.

Baseball derives much of its interest from a passion with the local team and a general disregard for the national picture. So I thought I’d tie up some national stats for the Mets and make a matchup to see if I could spark interest:

Francisco Lindor vs. Fernando Tatis Jr.

For the Mets it became clear that to make Lindor the first substantial signing of the Cohen regime, he would have to pay more than $ 340 million that Tatis had guaranteed five weeks earlier by the Padres. In this way Lindor received $ 341 million. Lindor, the more proven and aged, has a 10-year extension compared to the 14-year treaty of Tatis.

Tatis suffered a shoulder injury in five matches that season, which initially raised concerns that he might miss the most, if not all, of the rest of the season. But he was left out of the injured list on Friday as the Padres started an anticipated series against the team they are chasing in defending champions the Dodgers NL West. Lindor’s offense occurred during the Mets’ disappointing season, but his elite defense and enthusiasm stood out.

This is a matchup that will extend beyond this season. And it will also complicate how much it affects the upcoming free agent shortstop class, even with Lindor, Xavier Baiz, Carlos Correa, Corey Seeger and Trevor Story. Eventually, Lindor took advantage of Tatis’ total. Thus, we should expect to use Lindor’s $ 341 million. Caesar, a Scott Borus client, is particularly well established himself earlier this year that his rise in regulars and postseason for the Doggers last year was no fluke.

Jade Lowry vs Wilson Ramos

They are not Jared Kellenic, but they are unsatisfactory ties to Brody Van Wagen’s two-year reign that has moved on – and have you seen what an exodus from New York has been. At least soon?

When the weekend began, Ramos, playing for Detroit, had an AL-high six homers – or more than one Mets as a team.

Remember to mention how great Caesar looked this year? He had a .348 / .455 / .543 slash line. Lori had a .348 / .434 / .543 slash line and – wait for it – played in all 13 games in Oakland, or more than four he managed in his two Mets seasons (and there were 11 starts. , Compared to none as a meter). Lori walked the weekend with five straight multi-hit games and six straight RBIs. And recently there was a report that the Mets would not allow Lori to have knee surgery, which she said she needed and later got the offseason.

Steven Mattes vs Zack Wheeler

Nobody doubted the talent of the Mets and Wheeler when they were the Mets and in the pocket, they showed that talent. But is it possible that freedom from flushing is the key to continued excellence?

Wheeler – since his rejection of the Mets’ qualifying offer and a five-year signing, a $ 118 million deal with the Phillies – had a 2.93 ERA bridging 14 starts this season from the previous year. At the time, he was eighth in a big win over a replacement (Fangraphs). The Mets traded the Mets in late January to help the Blues with organizational depth in three pitches and redirect their $ 5.2 million for 2021.

The Blue Jays felt that basically ejecting Long Island from Queens would be a mental advantage for Lefty, and using his more often during two starts, the Mets had weak contact and more grounders in a 1.46 ERA. Was pushing to help.

Not so long ago, the Mets thought they would chase multiple championships with the rotation of Matz, Wheeler, Jacob DeGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey. With his fifth team in the last four seasons, Harvey had a 5.02 ERA through three starts with the Orioles.

Noah Syndergaard vs Luis Severino vs Chris Sale

The trio underwent Tommy John’s surgery in February-March 2020 in each other’s months. None of them can return before June. Syndergaard seems to be behind in rehab, followed by Severino. During the winter, sales were slowed due to neck injuries and COVID-19 cases. The time of Sale’s return did not seem so urgent as the Red Sox were not considered strong contenders as the Mets or Yankees. But the AL had the best record over two weeks in Boston, so you wonder if he could surprisingly be a Red Sox factor later in the year.

Early clashes with Domingo German, Corey Kluber and Jameson Tillon suggest that the Yankees would need Severino, but since that trio (especially Kluber and Tilon) were rarely pitched in 2019-20, three starts were made. How much can the Yankees expect from Severino. In 2019-20?

For Syndergaard, the timing of his return could be significant. With so many games postponed or suspended earlier this year, the 19 June Sept has two double headers for the Mets. 4 is already scheduled and will require additional to bear.
