Parenting mistakes have helped me learn

CANNES — Ryan Reynolds’ parenting mistakes are the keys to his success.

The movie star-turned-marketing-maven joked during his discussion, “Creativity at the Pace of Culture,” at Journal House Tuesday morning that raising his “wild” three daughters has taught him the most.

“I’m a parent of three girls. They’re wild. I think they have rabies sometimes,” he joked, issuing a Cannes Lions roar of laughter from the audience.

“I’m like any parent – I’ll have a moment where I’ll just snap. It’s not so much what you do in the moment that’s interesting, it’s what you do afterwards.”

Reynolds, 45, shared that his “brutal mistakes” have given him more inspiration and insight than any of his “successes” in both Hollywood and marketing.

“I used to tell my kids, ‘Don’t waste your mistakes,’” he said. “When you’re making mistakes it’s easy to sort of be absorbed by shame and sort of this idea that you’ve done something wrong, but you also have to look at it critically and use it as a stepping stone to learning something profound.”

The “ Guy” star joked his “parenting mistakes” are among his favorites as well as his “father’s.”

Given the extenuating circumstances for his and any family, Reynolds found himself triggered by commercials mentioning “these unprecedented times” and knew his company, MNTN, needed to pivot.

“No f–king s–t, a–hole,” he joked. “My kids haven’t been in school for five months. I’m losing my f–king mind! Of course they’re unprecedented times.

“You lose people very easily that way,” he said of that marketing tactic.
