Amanda Knox, the cleared former murder suspect once dubbed “Foxy Knoxy,” has tearfully revealed that she suffered a devastating and painful miscarriage during her first pregnancy with husband Christopher Robinson.
The 34-year-old opened up about her loss in the first episode in a five-part miniseries about infertility on her podcast, “Labyrinths,” where she announced that she experienced a miscarriage at six weeks, People reported.
Knox was studying abroad in Perugia, Italy, when she was accused of helping then-beau Raffaele Sollecito to kill her roommate, Meredith Kercher, in a supposed sex game gone wrong in 2007.
The pair were convicted, acquitted on appeal, then convicted and acquitted again.
Knox, who married Robinson in February 2020, said they “thought it was a straight line from unprotected sex to baby” — but, as Robinson says, “We were wrong. Painfully wrong.”
She said she “got pregnant very fast” once she and Robinson began trying after having an IUD removed, adding that they had already set up the nursery and a mural in the baby room.
On Mother’s Day in May, they told their parents that they were expecting their first child, according to the mag.
But Knox said she “knew something was wrong” when an ultrasound didn’t detect a heartbeat at the stage they were supposed to be able to hear one. Doctors hoped for a different outcome in a subsequent visit.
“We went back in a week later — that week sucked, waiting — and it hadn’t grown. It didn’t have a heartbeat,” she said.
“That was confusing to me, because I thought, ‘Why would there be a dead baby just hanging out in there? If it wasn’t viable, why wasn’t it going away?’ My body didn’t even know, and that felt weird to me. … I didn’t know that you could have a missed miscarriage,” Knox said.
She continued: “For all intents and purposes, I was pregnant with something that just was not growing. They were like, ‘Well, your body will probably figure it out sooner or later. It could take weeks, and if you wait, it becomes a more invasive procedure, a D&C is more invasive than a pill-based miscarriage,’ so they recommended that I induce it.”
Knox became emotional as she recounted filling her prescriptions for the procedure and sharing the heartbreaking news with her mother and mother-in-law.
She recounted “shaking” from a pain “like I’ve never experienced before,” followed by two days of “birthing blood, wads of blood, not like a period at all.”
“I did feel incredibly disappointed that that was the story of my first-ever pregnancy. … I thought, like, I knew exactly what I want to do with my first pregnancy, and to have it not come to fruition not through choice felt like a betrayal,” Knox said, People reported.
“Why? Do I have bad eggs and I just never knew? Am I actually too old? Did something happen to me while I was over in Italy? If it’s not easy and you don’t know why, then anything could be the problem. It’s frustrating how little information you have at any point in the process,” she said.
The sobbing woman added: “I don’t know who that baby was. I don’t know if I’ll ever know. It’s a weird thought.”
