Alex Smith has made a great comeback.
The veteran quarterback announced his retirement on Monday after returning from a life-threatening leg fracture last season.
“Two years ago I was sitting in a wheelchair, staring at my mango legs, wondering if I would ever go for a walk with my wife or play games with my children. Getting my helmet back was the furthest thing from my mind, ”Smith stated in a video that he saw shots of rehabbing from a compound leg fracture that he snapped on a sack against Texas on November 18, 2018.
Smith, 36, succumbed to injuries resulting in fatal necrotizing fasciitis, which led to sepsis. The Washington quarterback required 17 surgeries.
Smith returned last season and played eight matches, helping Washington to an NFC East title and winning the Comeback Player of the Year award. However, a calf injury prevented him from playing the Buccaneers in the team’s wild-card defeat. Washington released Smith before this offseason and showed some interest in free agency for potential backup roles.

After starring Collegley in Utah, Smith was the No. 1 pick among the 49ers in the 2005 NFL Draft. Smith made 174 games for the 49ers, Chiefs and Washington in his 16-year career.
