Asus is growing up with its latest gaming phone. The ROG Phone 5 lineup will start shipping worldwide this month, priced at 799 euros (about $ 950) and will have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage. Each configuration has a 6.78-inch FHD + OLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate and a 300Hz touch sampling rate. In addition, the headphone jack has made a comeback after being absent from ROG Phone 3, this time with a DAC quad in tow for hi-res audio. (If you’re wondering where ROG Phone 4 went, Asus skipped number four, like OnePlus did in some Asian languages because of its similarity with the word “death”.)
The most notable changes from the previous generation are exclusive to some of the even more expensive configurations, the ROG Phone 5 Pro and Ultimate (which I published a review on) for 1,199 euros (about $ 1,420) in April and 1,9999 euros in May. Asus’s new gaming phones are not very large departures from its predecessors, although the hardware and software are more sophisticated. I reviewed the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate, and until it trusts its promises that it is a device and juggles in some clever ways, it seems hard to pay $ 1,580 for it. Even the base configuration of $ 950 is not what I would consider affordable.
Ultimate & Pro includes “ROG Vision”, a feature that pushes premiere or custom text or graphics to its rear-facing OLED screen. This is a spin on the “anime matrix” effect of Asus used in the Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop, allowing you to personalize your phone if you wish. The standard ROG Phone 5 simply has a backlit ROG logo, which some may find to be just enough pizza.
