A 23-year-old woman gave birth in a Kyiv subway station being used as a bomb shelter as Russian air raids pummeled the capital city.
Police helped deliver baby Mia early Friday in the underground station, where families were taking cover on the third day of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the country.
“Mia was born this night in stressful environment- bombing of Kyiv,” Ukrainian Parliament member Hannah Hopko posted on Facebook with a close-up photo of the newborn wrapped in a blanket.
“When Putin kills Ukrainians we appeal to mothers in Russia and Belarus to protest against Russia war in Ukraine,” her post said.
Trains are no longer running in the city as residents hide from the onslaught, The Kyiv Independent reported.
Hopko also posted about a second newborn, a boy, born in the basement of a maternity ward, “in conditions, far from those who deserve a new life.”
Another member of Parliament called for action.
“The Blitz of London 1940 is being repeated by Russia in Ukraine in 2022,” tweeted Anastasia Radina, who heads the body’s anti-corruption committee, with a photo of women tending to the new mom as she holds the baby boy.
