One of Bill Belichick’s former players thinks the idea of him coaching into his 80’s would be no bueno.
Christian Fauria, who played tight end on the Patriots from 2002 through 2005, spoke on his WEEI show about the news, which ProFootballTalk founder Mike Florio wrote in his upcoming book, that Pats owner Robert Kraft once said that he wants Belichick to coach until he’s an octogenarian.
“It’s a bad idea,” Fauria said. “In no, way shape or form does this work at all. When you think about the oldest coaches to ever coach in the NFL, you start with Romeo Crennel who a couple years ago beat out George Halas and Marv Levy.
“I remember watching him, and asking, ‘Is he just miserable? Or is he just conditioned to do this and only this, and he’s gonna stop once his legs go out?’”
Crennel, at 73 years old in 2020, set the NFL record when he became interim head coach of the Houston Texans.
Belichick turns 70 years old in April.
He did lead the Patriots to a playoff berth this past season, but it is impossible to know if he could do for another decade? If anyone could, it’s Belichick — or perhaps Pete Carroll, who is actually seven months older than the Patriots’ coach.
