Blake Bortles released after Aaron Rodgers returns to Packers

Aaron Rodgers has finally ended a months-long holdout, and it’s costing one Packers player a job.

With Rodgers having reported to training camp on Tuesday, the Packers are releasing veteran quarterback Blake Bortles, according to ESPN.

Bortles, 29, signed a one-year deal with Green Bay in May, shortly after Rodgers was a no-show at voluntary OTAs. Jordan Love, the franchise’s first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, is likely to serve as Rodgers’ backup. Jake Dolegala and Kurt Benkert are the other quarterbacks currently on the Packers’ roster.

Bortles, originally taken with the third overall pick in the 2014 draft by the Jaguars, has been released five times over the past two years and did not see action during the 2020 season. He has 103 touchdown passes and 75 interceptions across a seven-year NFL career.
